INTERNET, MAIL, PHONE

Email is the fastest, most reliable way to communicate between home and students in San Miguel.  We highly recommend using e-mail as your primary mode of communication.  Internet access is available at many internet cafes.  Connection speed varies drastically.  Some internet cafes (internet san miguel, on reloj) do allow individuals to connect using their own computers.

Mail between the U.S. and Mexico may take several weeks.  This is the slowest and least reliable method for communication.  Post cards and letters sent to the U.S. using the Mexican postal service may take 2-4 weeks in arriving.  There are several U.S. mail services available within San Miguel.  These services drive the mail daily to Texas and send mail from there:  Border Crossings on Calle Correo,  La Conexion on Aldama.

Phone:  Phone calls from Mexico to the U.S. using telmex are expensive, but phone cards are available in many tiendas and farmacias. San Miguel does have some cell phone service.  Your cell phone from home may or may not work here depending on the contracts your service provider has with the Mexican tower owners.  However, roaming charges and long distance rates are extremely costly here (sometimes $2 a minute!).  In an emergency, family members can call the MexArt office to leave a message.  MexArt does not have a central office with normal office personnel.  Please leave a message and a message will be relayed to the recipient of the message.

RESTAURANTS

Olé OléCalle Loreto.  Great fajitas: veggie, chicken, beef or combo.  Toro paraphernalia decor. San Miguel institution.  Lunch or dinner. Slow service, expect to take a particularly long time.

Ten Ten Pie:  Favorite lunch spot.  Great giant burritos.... veggie, chicken, beef, or made to order. Lots of Mexican basics or sandwich.  Inexpensive.

La Parroquia:  A must for a weekend breakfast/brunch.... you may have to wait.  Good food, a real hang out in an outdoor courtyard. Run by a French woman.

Buen Cafe:  Breakfast or lunch.  Good choices for vegetetarians.  Try the carrot cake or any dessert.  Healthier food in general.

CarminaNice lunch. …fixed menu daily.

Papa Joe's: Burger joint.  Have vegetarian burgers (soy, eggplant, or other veggies). Great wedge fries.  Have homemade desserts…. Ask what’s fresh. Carrot cake is particularly moist

BugamvilliaFancier Mexican/american

Pueblo ViejoNext door to mama mia.  Live music most nights.  Good Mexican standards. Lots of Mexicans eat there.

Gumbo’sGood Pizza, pasta and crepes.  On hidalgo.

Meson de San Jose:  Serves Breakfast and lunch but there is a rumor that they purify by using lime juice.  Breakfast is safe and good. Beautiful courtyard… but can be cold on winter mornings.

El TomateMany vegetarian options. Great curried tuna sandwich… sever varieties of veggie burgers, sandwiches, and great daily special meals.

Burritos/QuesadillasOn Mesones. The best flour tortilla makers in SMA. Lunch/Snack only, open 10 - 5. Order buritacos, buriquesos etc.. at first counter and order your fillings at the back counter (eat in or take out.)

Tio Lucas:  Bar/Restaurant. Popular at night…. Late.  Lots of grilled meat dishes.  Live music many nights.

Bella ItaliaGOOD Italian. Raviolis, eggplant parmesan, pastas, and interesting specials. Located in the Hotel Sautto court yard.

NirvanaNouveau Mexican cuisine.  Fancy. Worth it.  Try the two colored soup.  How did they do that? Expensive, but worth the splurge on a special occasion.

Buena Vida:  Bakery and café. Breakfast or lunch. Great baked goods (healthy), interesting baguette sandwiches.

Mama MíaRestaurant and bar.  Edible food.  Menu covers the basics so anyone can find something they’ll like, but nothing excessively tasty or interesting.

Casa Payo:  Lots of meat dishes and empanadas.

Amigos:  Enter on Codo.  Salads, sandwiches, soups, great desserts. New.

Hecho en Mexico:  A new gringo favorite.  Good menu, good food, friendly staff. I love the ensalada jardin with honey mustard dressing.  It’s a meal.

Rinconcito:  A standard in  San Antonio, so it’s a bit of a walk.  Menu offers light fair to heavier:  stews, quesadillas filled with veggies, chicken, pork, nachos, etc…Yum.

Juanitas:  Decent pizza, and very good calzones.  Eat in or take out.  Rustic setting, cement rooftop and plastic chairs.  Very neighborhoody.

Don Quixote:  (Pila Seca) Good food, beautiful courtyard seating area.

La Grotta:  Pizza, pasta…. Order one already-invented concoction or design your own.  Upstairs is cooler in summer and warmer in winter.  Good, thin-crust specialty pizzas.

La Ventana:  Coffee and limited (mostly pretty bland) baked goods. Coffee is organic, a home brew. Can also buy grains or ground coffee to take home.  Best coffee in SMA.

La Capilla:  French restaurant.  Fancy and delicious and rich.  Romantic setting and feeling. Waiters are well trained and attentive. Expensive.

Bagel Café:  The only place to get non-frozen bagels. Other delicious baked goods too.  Yummy egg McBagel and delicious sandwiches on homemade bread.  Breakfast or Lunch.  A Local hang-out.

El Correo:  The best guacamole in SMA. Lots of Mexican and American food on menu. Standard food, expansive menu, all well-done.

Jardin Café:  Open all meals. Good breakfast.  Decent pizza too, club sandwich. On the expensive side.

Don Thomas:  (bottom corner of San Francisco, across from ice cream shop)  Great soups! Several kinds…. Also enchiladas and other items.  All good, but I usually go for the soup.

La Enchilada :  Guess what you’ll eat here?  Only enchiladas.  Choose your combo. Fillings: chicken, bean, or cheese.  Sauce: red, green, mole.  Milder flavors catering to the gringo crowd, but Mexicans eat there too.

Sierra Nevada (en el parque):  Fine dining. Breakfast is reasonable.  Expensive in general. Pretty patio seating.

Jacaranda:  Good American cuisine.  Shows rental movies, check paper for showings and times.

Cafe Colón:  Comida corrida, Mesones #25

HaremMiddle eastern. Stuffed grape leaves, hummus, etc… very garlic-y.
