The History of Casa Crayola's Duets Evenings

The Duet series dinner concerts began in February 2007 with the primary purpose of providing performance opportunities to professional Mexican classical musicians.  Many musicians are forced to take jobs outside of music or spend many of their hours teaching instead of practicing and performing.  Of course practice is what makes or breaks a musician.  However, no one pays a musician for the many hours of practice that goes into becoming a musician or presenting a concert. The Duets evenings are a way for these musicians to make a living doing what they were trained to do....perform.  100% of the profits from the evening go directly to the musicians.

The evening begins with a 35-40 minute concert of duets presented by two talented musicians.  Following the concert, dinner is served. During the home-made Mexican dinner served family-style, guests have ample opportunity to socialize with the musicians.

Performer Biographies

Enrique Prado started his piano career at the young age of 11. Learning under the instruction of Marta Garcia Renart he quickly earned his prodigy status.  In 1994 he won first place at the national piano competition, Concurso Esperanza Cabrera. Following this success, he received a scholarship to study in the United States and then completed his studies in a renowned conservatory in Cuba where he received his dual degree in performance and pedagogy.  Enrique has taught piano since 1995. In addition to teaching, he is a well sought-after performer for chamber music and solo performances. Enrique has performed in Bellas Artes in Mexico City and in San Miguel as well as other important venues throughout Mexico.

Mauro Ledesma was born and raised in San Miguel. When he was 14 years old he took piano lessons with Enrique Prado who was only few years older.  He continued his studies in San Miguel at Bellas Artes with Marta Garcia Renart through high school.  In 2001 he was accepted to and entered the musical school at Universidad de Colima where he studied with the world renown Russian pianist, composer and orchestral director, Anatoly Zatin. Mauro received his degree in 2007 when he returned to San Miguel. Mauro has played in various ensembles, solo concerts, as accompanist to soloists and choral groups, and as soloist with chamber orchestra.

Xavier Hernandez, tenor voice, born and raised in San Miguel, completed his music degree and studies in Mexico City where he met and married Liliana Gutierrez, pianist. Xavier is a frequent soloist on the stage in San Miguel and around Mexico. He is the founder of Ensamble San Miguel, a small ensemble group that gives concerts and plays at weddings and other events. He is also the director of the community chorus, Voces Unidas, and a new children's chorus sponsored by the biblioteca. His performances are always dynamic with a natural charisma.
